"I feel strongly about creating
art pieces that are accessible and
functional for people in their
everyday life. I also like the idea
that what they are wearing will not
be duplicated and in that way it
becomes their very own."
"I work with color, texture and
pattern combined with other elements
to create complex pieces which evoke
a sense of unity. With each piece
that is constructed, a new
combination has developed. This is
the beauty of making one-of-a-kind
jewelry; each piece has its' own
history."
Though Lauren's work maintains a
contemporary style, it stems from a
varied set of influences and
mediums. Lauren enjoys using
primitive shapes "because they
challenge the imagination" as well
as classical and/or traditional
shapes "because they offer a sense
of familiarity". Organic textures
and colors or "tones of the earth"
are also very evident in Laurens'
work. Many of the pieces have
incorporated some type of landscape
whether it gives "a feeling of the
sea, desert or mountains as land
meets sky." Beads, stones, minerals,
metals, sea glass, and found objects
combine with her own watercolor
paintings to provide numerous color,
textural and design combinations. "I
enjoy making a statement with a
shiny silver bar, adding luminosity
with a triangle of sea glass,
creating dimensions with a fragment
of turquoise or giving a piece
movement with a group of mixed
beads."
Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1962,
Lauren grew up in a family of
accomplished artists. She went on to
earn a degree in the Fine Arts from
the University of New Hampshire and
soon after was involved in the
Graphic Arts, becoming the art
director for several magazines and
projects as well as an illustrator
and a seminar leader in the field.
Lauren has now returned to creating
Fine Art in a wearable form and is
an independent jeweler living in
York, Maine,
Juried member of the League of New
Hampshire Craftsmen.
