ARTIST STATEMENT
The process of beginning with
nothing but a vague idea and seeing
that idea materialize as a painting
or sculpture, which communicates
through visual language, provokes
me. I approach each piece without
preconceived ideas, allowing the
forms to develop. I remain in the
present, alert for images to reveal
themselves. Working with the
infinitely forgiving medium of wax,
I layer, burn, scrape, embed and
transfer. Often implementing
contrasting materials, like
encaustic, lead and ceramic, I am
intrigued by the rapport, whether it
contrasts, harmonizes, opposes or
compliments. Dividing the surface
into compartments fosters a dialogue
among the elements. Those elements
that speak to me remain, while those
that do not are removed.
BIOGRAPHY
- Kim Bernard received a BFA from
Parsons School of Design, NYC in
1987 and resides in Southern Maine.
Exhibiting her encaustic and
sculptural work nationally, she is
recent recipient of the National
Prize Show Sculpture Award, as well
as an invited artist at the 2nd
Annual Encaustic Invitational.
Bernard is represented by Arden
Gallery, Boston, MA, Bowersock
Gallery, Provincetown, MA, Fenn
Gallery, Woodbury, CT, Hawthorn
Gallery, Birmingham, AL and Lucky
Street Gallery, Key West, FL. She
teaches at the Maine College of Art,
New Hampshire Institute of Art and
Haystack Mountain School of Crafts.
Bernard is the founding member of
New England Wax, a professional
exhibiting association of encaustic
artists, and has offered numerous
presentations on encaustic and
sculpture, acted as an invited juror
and guest lecturer. Working both
sculpturally and with encaustic,
Bernard exhibits her work
nationally, implementing contrasting
materials such as wax, lead and
ceramic, evoking a sense of sacred
space. Intrigued with the phenomena
that objects and places have the
power to elicit an air of
spirituality her works are
simultaneously archaic and
contemporary.
